Decking Materials Choice
Mahogany Decking: If You Want The Best
If you want the best from your deck, a home improvement that can make you proud, then you should choose the best decking material. One of the best materials out there is mahogany. Of course, it will cost you more than the alternatives, but the results will be outstanding. The red color of the material makes the deck look very warm and inviting.Although mahogany is very durable, it will still require annual maintenance.
Hardwood Decking
There are other hard woods to choose from apart from Mahogany - meranti is one example. Some of these "new hard woods" are grown in a sustainable manner but are still among the most expensive wooden decking options. In addition, regular cleaning and treatment will be required to keep the deck looking like new.
Pressure Treated Softwood
Pressure Treated Wood: Lasting about 15 years, this is the least expensive and most common type of decking. Most pressure-treated wood is made from Southern yellow pine, which is quick to splinter if not maintained. When working with this wood, always use gloves, wear a mask, and never burn it because the toxic chemicals in the wood that prevent rot and termites can also be harmful to your health. These chemicals are also highly corrosive so for best results, use only stainless steel fasteners.
Composite Decking
A relative newcomer on the decking scene, composite decking is becoming increasingly popular. It is available in a wide range of colours and finishes and has very low maintaenence requirements. An annual pressure wash should be sufficient to keep your deck looking like new. On the other hand, composite decking is still expensive when compared to soft wood decking.
